Obesity has become a worldwide health hazard and majority of people, male and female, of every age carry extra weight on their bodies, which not only develop physical disorders but also mental ailments, especially in women. Yoga has come to the rescue for obese persons.
Regular practice of each and every yogic exercise affects and corrects some part of the body by melting extra fat. There are three categories of overweight: fatty overweight, watery overweight and cellulite, which have been described in separate chapters in this book.
Power Yoga or Ashtanga Yoga are the original postures designed by Patanjali, the sage who initiated yoga over 300 years ago. The word Ashtanga means eight-fold path: Ashta means eight and Anga means limbs. The eight limbs of yoga include:
O Yama (ahinsa or non-violence), Satya (truth), Asetya (non- stealing), Brahmacharya (self-control) and Aparlgraha (unselfishness). O Niyama, which refers to Saucha (cleanliness), Santosha (contentment)), Tapas (effort), Svadhyaya (self-study) and Ishwara Pranidhana (faith in God). Asana means a posture. Pranayama stands for control of the senses such as taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing.
O Dharana means concentration. O Dhyana means meditation. O Samadhi means that unites with God. O And finally Yogasana.
Obese individuals have many features which make them unique. They love to eat all the time. Many of them just can’t satisfy the hunger pangs. Some individuals rush to eat their food and never even chew the food down. A common characteristic of these individuals is that they love to sit and never exercise.
Some experts recommend the following methods to prevent obesity: * Drinking lots of water every day. This may range anywhere from 8-12 glasses a day * Replace the three large meals with numerous small meals * Substitute water for sugary beverages * Exercise daily
